Installation

Natural Sod Installation: A Step-by-Step Guide

A lush, green lawn starts with proper sod installation. Following the right steps ensures strong roots, healthy soil, and long-term success.

Removal

Removal

Remove existing grass, weeds, and debris to prevent interference with new sod. Use a shovel or a mechanical sod cutter for small areas and machinery for larger areas. If weeds persist, apply a non-selective herbicide two weeks before removal.

Rake thoroughly to remove rocks and level the surface. Fill low spots with quality topsoil for a smooth base. Proper preparation ensures sod makes direct contact with soil, promoting fast root growth.

Compost

Compost

Healthy soil is essential for a thriving lawn. Add compost or amended topsoil enhances moisture retention, nutrients, and microbial activity. A soil test can help determine if additional amendments like lime or fertilizer are needed. Check with your local extension agency for testing.

Spread 3 yards of compost per 1000 square feet evenly and mix it into the soil for better root establishment.

Grass installation

Grass installation

Install the farm fresh sod immediately to prevent drying. Start along a straight edge, like a driveway, for alignment.

Lay sod in a staggered, brick-like pattern to minimize seams and prevent erosion. Fit pieces snugly without overlapping. Press edges together to eliminate gaps. Trim excess sod along edges.

Till and Grade

Till and Grade

Tilling in the compost and amended soil 4" - 6" loosens and conditions the compacted soil, allowing deeper root penetration and improved water absorption. Use a rototiller for large areas or a garden fork for smaller spaces.

Next, grade the soil to ensure a smooth surface. Avoid dips where water collects by creating a slight slope away from buildings. Lightly compact the soil with a roller for a firm base.

Fertilize and irrigate

Fertilize and irrigate

Fertilize after the sod installation. Follow the instructions and rates provided on the fertilizer bag.

Water immediately, soaking the sod and soil to at least 6 inches deep. Keep sod moist for the first two weeks to establish strong roots.

Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation. After two weeks, gently tug on the sod—if it resists, roots have taken hold. Gradually reduce watering to 2–3 times per week to promote deep root growth and drought resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Natural Grass or Artificial Turf, we have your barre ground covered!

What’s the difference between turf and sod?

Sod is natural grass that we grow, harvest, and deliver in rolls, ready to be laid down for instant grass coverage. Turf, on the other hand, is synthetic, low-maintenance, and perfect for areas where water conservation or durability is a priority, like dog parks, playgrounds, or commercial spaces. Both have their unique benefits depending on your project’s needs.

It depends on your priorities. If you want a natural, lush lawn for residential or high-end projects, sod might be your best bet. If you’re looking for low-maintenance, water-saving options for commercial properties, dog parks, or playgrounds, turf could be the perfect fit. We can help you decide during a consultation.

We do both. If you’re a DIYer or a landscaper who prefers to handle the installation yourself, we can supply you with high-quality sod or turf. Of course, if you need professional installation, we’ve got you covered there too.

Most projects take about 1-2 weeks from start to finish. That includes everything from the first consultation to the final installation. We work quickly without cutting corners.

We partner with landscapers, municipalities, schools, and commercial developers, along with residential clients looking to enhance their outdoor spaces. Whatever your project, we’ve got you covered.
